After several weeks preparing hand-cut foam board shapes, on Tuesday 14 July it was time to install: the new edition of Madrid Craft Week was taking place in the Barrio de las Letras and, for the opening, visitors would tour Missmsmith’s art installation.
The proposal came in the final days of lockdown. The team at La Fórmula de Comunicación were relaunching MCW, and creating a mural for the occasion was an idea that filled me with excitement. A few days later, we found out that the City Council was very interested in taking part and loved our creations, so they wanted Deputy Mayor Begoña Villacís to open craft week by visiting several key spots, including Missmsmith’s installation.
White geometric diamond-shaped pieces in two sizes and golden pyramids were randomly arranged on an aquamarine canvas on one of the neighbourhood’s streets. In between, three large hand-cut shapes (one with the Madrid skyline) layered with the organisations’ logos, also made of paper, and a final detail: four giant paper elements to be placed by members of the City Council. A pencil, a paintbrush, a pair of scissors and a ball of yarn, representing the craft disciplines, were the icing on the cake of an installation that remained for visitors on Calle San Pedro.
